Gutter Repairs, Fascias and Soffits in Telford

Water pouring over the front of a gutter in heavy rain. A joint that drips onto the path all day after a shower. Fascia boards gone soft and grey, or a soffit panel hanging loose with birds going in and out. The roofline is easy to ignore from inside the house, but a gutter that fails sends water down the wall, into the brickwork and sometimes through to a ceiling that looks like a roof leak. Tell us what you are seeing and we will pass it to an independent roofing firm that handles gutters and rooflines across Telford.

Guttering, Fascias & Soffits in Telford

Gutter Repairs

Leaking joints. Plastic gutters are joined with clip-in unions sealed by rubber gaskets. The gaskets harden and shrink, and the joint starts to drip. Resealing or replacing the union is a common fix.

Sagging runs. Brackets snap or work loose from the fascia, the gutter drops, and water pools in the low spot instead of running to the outlet.

Wrong fall. A gutter needs a slight slope towards its downpipe. If it was fitted level, or has moved, water sits and overflows at the far end.

Blocked outlets and downpipes. Moss, leaves and tile grit build up at the outlet, and one blockage can make a whole run overflow.

Overflowing corners. Where two slopes send water into one corner, the gutter can be overwhelmed. A corner guard or a larger section sometimes solves it.

If the overflow is always in the same place in heavy rain, the roofer will also look at the gutter size and the number of downpipes.

uPVC Fascias and Soffits on Estate Houses

The fascia is the board along the edge of the roof that the gutter is fixed to. The soffit closes the gap underneath it, between the fascia and the wall. On estate housing in Telford, these were often timber to begin with, and on many houses they have already been replaced with uPVC.

Where timber boards are still in place, they rot at the ends and joints, paint flakes, and the gutter brackets lose their grip. There are two ways to deal with it. Capping covers the old boards with uPVC. It is quicker, but only sensible if the timber behind is sound. Full replacement takes the old boards off, deals with any rotten rafter ends, and fits new uPVC fascias and soffits. It is the longer-lasting answer. With the fascias off, the eaves ventilation and bottom row of tiles can be checked, and gutters and gable bargeboards are usually renewed at the same time.

Cast Iron on Older Streets and in the Gorge

Victorian houses in the older towns, and many houses in the Ironbridge Gorge, still have cast-iron gutters and downpipes. Cast iron lasts a long time if it is painted, but the joints rust and the sections are heavy, so a failed bracket can bring a length down. Repairs usually mean resealing joints, replacing cracked sections and repainting.

In a conservation area or in the Ironbridge Gorge, swapping cast iron for plastic on a street-facing wall can change how the house looks. Ask the council's conservation team before changing anything visible. On the south bank of the Gorge, that means Shropshire Council. Our page on heritage roofs explains the split.

Gutter Cleaning

Gutter cleaning is usually where a repair is found. A gutter that overflows may simply be blocked, but once it is cleared the roofer can see what is underneath: a cracked joint, a broken bracket, a section that has lost its fall, or tile grit that points to a problem on the roof above. That is why the enquiries we pass on are about fixing the gutter, with clearing it as part of the job, rather than routine cleaning on its own. If a blockage is what you are dealing with, say so when you get in touch.

Seamless Gutters

Seamless gutters are formed on site from a coil of aluminium, so a long run has no joints except at the corners and outlets. Fewer joints means fewer places to leak, and they suit houses where joint leaks keep returning. They cost more than standard plastic and not every firm offers them, so they are worth asking about rather than expecting.

What Changes the Price

Length and height. A bungalow is quick to reach. A two- or three-storey house may need a tower or scaffold.

Repair or replace. Resealing a joint is a small job. Replacing a whole run with new fascias and soffits is a different scale of work.

The material. Standard plastic, cast iron and aluminium sit at different price levels.

What is behind the boards. Rotten rafter ends found when fascias come off add time and timber.

Combining jobs. If scaffold is already up for roof work, doing the roofline at the same time saves on access.

Our guide to roof repair costs covers typical UK ranges for smaller roof and roofline jobs, and how access affects a quote.

How It Works

Tell us which part of the roofline is the problem, whether the house is a bungalow, a two-storey or taller, and what the gutters are made of if you know. We pass the details to an independent roofing firm covering your part of Telford, and they arrange to look and quote. We don't do the work, and we don't inspect, approve or check the firm. It's free with no obligation, and enquiries outside working hours get a call back the next working day.

Common Questions

Why is my gutter overflowing when it isn't blocked?

The gutter may have lost its fall, so water sits instead of running to the downpipe. It may also be too small for the roof area feeding it, or a corner may be taking more water than it can carry. A roofer can check the fall, the size and the number of outlets.

Should I cap my old fascias or replace them?

Capping is only sensible if the timber behind is sound. If the boards are rotten, covering them hides the problem and the brackets can lose their grip. Full replacement lets the roofer check the rafter ends and eaves ventilation too.

Can cast-iron gutters be repaired rather than replaced?

Often, yes. Joints can be resealed, cracked sections replaced and the run repainted. In a conservation area or the Ironbridge Gorge, a like-for-like repair keeps the house looking as it does, so ask the council before swapping to plastic.
